Rape & Murder Convict Dera Chief Ram Rahim to Get Parole?

We know about the chief of Dera Sacha Sauda, Gurmeet Singh Ram Rahim Insan as being one of India’s most powerful ‘spiritual leaders’. We also know of the guilty verdict announced for two counts of rape by a CBI court in Panchkula as well as murder. In spite of this, the godman continues to command the faith of millions and Twitter trends regularly laud the man as a saint and speak reverentially of various Dera initiatives even now. Now there is news of a parole application made on behalf of Dera Chief Ram Rahim.

Parole application

A 20-year sentence was handed down for Gurmeet Ram Rahim for rape and murder. One year of the sentence was completed as an inmate of Sunaria jail in Rohtak. Now representatives of Ram Rahim have applied for parole. The application is based on the Dera Chief’s need to farm his fields in Sirsa.

Government backs parole request

According to the Haryana government, it is the 'right' of every inmate to apply for parole after a certain time spent in prison. The application for parole has been backed by the authorities based on the view that Ram Rahim has been a model inmate and has not violated any prison regulations.

Outrage

People have expressed their shock and outrage that the government is backing the release of a man convicted on two counts of rape and murder; with other charges still pending.

Sending out the wrong message

The Dera chief continues to be a powerful and influential person; who, if let out of jail can influence and subvert the course of justice. His release would send out the wrong message and embolden other criminals, said some commentators.

Government backing a rapist?

People have also expressed reservations about law and order problems that could occur; recalling the rioting and arson that took place in Panchkula following Ram Rahim's sentencing.

The support continues, however

In spite of the criticism of the parole plea and the authorities backing it, there are many who support the release of Ram Rahim. Supporters and followers continue to recount the good work done by the Dera.

Clean chit?

The current Haryana government is seen to be close to Ram Rahim and has received his support and endorsement in previous elections.

Eye on elections?

Many commentators are of the view that this tacit support by the government is made with one eye on the upcoming assembly elections; since Dera followers form a significant vote bank.

What is the need for parole?

About a month ago, a parole application was made to permit the godman to attend the wedding of his foster daughters; which was turned down. This time, the reason cited for the need for parole is also being questioned. If there is a real requirement for the release of a prisoner for sowing, harvesting etc. of land, the parole application may be considered. Questions about ownership and possession of agricultural land are also now being called into question.

Will he, won’t he get parole?

The decision will be taken by the divisional commissioner whether the Dera chief should or should not get parole. Various aspects will have to be taken into account before deciding. There is a very serious apprehension that if released, Ram Rahim would retreat to the fortification of the Dera headquarters guarded by a private militia. Regaining custody of the convict could become a problem and cause further law and order issues.

Parole is not a right

Psephologist and academic Yogendra Yadav has said that under the rules, Ram Rahim is not entitled to parole. He also tweeted that, if parole is granted he would challenge this in court. We can only hope that it doesn’t come to that and that the parole application is rightly rejected.
