As kids sit before device screens trying to adapt to the changed reality of online classes, they are no longer sure that missing school is a good idea. Many are longing to return to school. Meanwhile, educational authorities are scrambling to try and adapt to the changed reality of the COVID necessitated school closures. The solution put forward by the CBSE is to reduce the yearly syllabus by 30%. Many have heaved a sigh of relief at this; however some have questioned the parts of the syllabus that have been omitted.
According to the Union Cabinet Minister for Human Resource Development, the ‘core concepts’ will be retained while there will be an overall 30% reduction of the syllabus.
There will be less to study and exams will be relatively easier, feel many of the students.
Those who are used to working hard and topping may feel that they will lose their edge.
There may well be students who have used their time at home studying and revising the entire syllabus.
Previous year students may be less than happy.
Aspirants for competitive exams will probably find that this is detrimental for them.
Some students feel that this change will not help to ease things much – especially for science stream students.
Some opposition leaders have made the charge that the removed portions of the syllabus have a political agenda behind them and should have been retained.
These are ‘core concepts’ that are important for all students to learn. This tweet’s mention of job applications is an oblique reference to rising unemployment levels in the nation.
People have questioned the fact that it is chapters on democratic rights of citizens, gender, caste and secularism that were seen fit to be removed.
Many students have been asking for other policy changes that would safeguard the future of students. They feel that the inconsistent policies are playing with the future of some students.
Students enrolled in college or those preparing for competitive exams are still troubled. They face an uncertain future - even as many high school students rejoice and welcome the 30% reductions in the syllabus of CBSE classes 9 To 12.
