Times When Bollywood Disastrously Failed Hollywood

Imitation is the best form of flattery, it is said. But even flattery doesn't work always, it is believed. Particularly not when what you see is a disengaging piece of cinema that aches your brain muscles, most of it being snatched as a leaf from a Hollywood book. There are many occasions where Bollywood blankly 'copied' Hollywood cinema but we present you 12 cases where the imitations fell flat on their face.

1. Deewane Hue Pagal- There's Something About Mary

The famous trio of Akshay-Suneil-Paresh tried to tickle the funny bone much like Cameron Diaz and Matt Dillon along with Ben Stiller in this original laugh riot. But their efforts wouldn't have tricked the clumsiest of laughers. In the end the needless inclusion of a dog in the original 1998 cult which proved to be a pivotal aspect of the flick seemed to have packed more power than the flat out dead rubber chemistry between the Bollywood trio.

2. Bar Bar Dekho- About Time

When Rachel McAdams and Domhall Gleeson made the time travel drama a must watch in 2013, little did they know that 3 years later, a Katrina who still reels at the thought of 'acting' would do enough injustice to their very original story tagging Siddharth Malhotra alongside. The result: apart from a few bearable songs, the movie served fans a good opportunity to enjoy popcorn-cola coz much of what transpired on big screen went into a no man's zone.

3. Mast- Notting Hill

Aftab Shivdasani and Urmila Matondkar tried their best to lend gravitas and substance to a product of a faltering script in Mast, a loose adaptation of the celeb who goes home with the common man in Notting Hill. But nothing could save Mast from fizzling out on the box office, despite good numbers and music.

4. Hum Kaun Hai- The Others

Horror! That's one word to describe the outcome of the film starring Mr. Bachchan and our very own Meryl Streep, Dimple Kapadia. If not for acting or storyline, then pretty much for the horrific lack of scare it delivered.

5. Dil Bole Hadippa - She’s The Man

Not even Rani Mukherjee, an actor of brilliant pedigree could rescue this absolute no brainer from meeting its final fate- sinking! But on first thought, what was she snorts when she decided to play multiple avatars, one being peculiarly younger than her own age?

6. Aabra Ka Daabra- Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

We urge J.K. Rowling to sit through the two and half hour brainless saga called Aabra Ka Dabra and see how she's inspired rather the lack of it here in Bollywood. Colluding with poor acting, a script that went nowhere failed to even impress the kids, who it was originally meant for.

7. U, Me aur Hum- The Notebook

What on earth were Kajol-Ajay thinking when they gave us a second outing of their very complex private romance on the screen? We're glad that Nicholas Sparks didn't turn up to see his epic romance being belted in a brainless zone in U, Me aur Hum! He would have had second thoughts about writing then!

8. Chori Chori Chupke Chupke- Pretty Woman

The parallels were interesting, so was the star-cast. But the acting wasn't. This was a strictly one time watch a romantic triangle between powerhouse actors- Preity and Rani, who then were at the peak of their careers, but having a Salman walking tightrope of a romantic sage going nowhere saw him fall inevitably to a crushing defeat, taking the movie along with him. Well done Julia, for not watching this one! We know your love for India!

9. Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai- My Best Friend's Wedding

If you've seen the very moving and heart-wrenching Julia Roberts and Durmot Mulroney starrer, chances are you fell in love once again. But if you saw this brainless adaptation called Mere Yaar Ki Shadi Hai with an ill-fitting Uday Chopra wearing denim bell-bottoms and a faded brown jacket, chances are you'd rather prefer to have your derriere impaled by a giant cactus instead. Can't say for you, but I have made my own choice.

10. Bang Bang- Knight and Day

Hrithik and Katrina were set to scorch the screen and implode with fireworks in their chemistry. Instead, they left audiences 'burning' in their mindless adaptation of an ordinary Tom Cruise spy thriller that one felt was originally meant to tease a juvenile at the behest of giving him some mind-boggling action. In the end, Bang-Bang backfired and hurt Hrithik and Katrina themselves!

11. Dhai Akshar Prem Ke- A Walk in the Clouds

We may sound harsh, but truth it inevitably, the truth. Picture Keanu Reeves on one end and Abhishek Bachchan on the other. Picture a dramatic storyline sun-swept by achingly beautiful countryside landscape on one hand and the melancholy of seeing a drab romantic no-brainer featuring a hyper energetic Bachchan romantic jodi! We'd still love holding on to the classic, Keanu romantic hit.
