IPL 2019 proceeds along mostly predictable lines – the leaders and stragglers clinging to their positions fairly tenaciously. Here is what went down in the past one week at the IPL 2019, the close matches, the highs, lows and of course the memes:
Each team has now played 13 matches each. With the Chennai Super Kings continuing to sit pretty at the top of the table with 18 points, Mumbai Indians are next with 16 points. Kings XI Punjab and Royal Challengers Bangalore are predictably at the bottom of the table with 10 and 9 points respectively.
Sun Risers Hyderabad’s 160 was not enough to deter Rajasthan Royals who overtook the target with 5 balls and 7 wickets to spare. There were lots of memes being made around Ashton Turner finally scoring runs after consecutive ducks in three previous matches.
Delhi Capitals made 187 runs in their allotted overs, RCB crashed to a 16 run defeat. This means that RCB are now out of the competition while DC have made it to the playoffs.
Yet another IPL, yet another disappointment.
The Kolkata Knight Riders put up a massive 232 losing just 2 wickets and the Mumbai Indians could only manage to get up to 198 while losing 7 wickets. Andre Russell was on fire; with 80 off 40
Hardik Pandya’s blistering knock of 91 runs fell short of a ton, but was the fastest fifty of the competition.
SRH’s score of 212 was way out of the reach of KXIP. The Punjab team crashed to a 45 run defeat. David Warner’s 81 off 56 was a standout knock.
RCB made 62 runs in five overs and set a target of 63 in a rain curtailed match. RR made 41 in 3.2 overs before play was called off. The match had no result and each team got one point from the match.
CSK made 179 but DC crashed to an 80 run defeat, losing all their wickets in just 16.2 overs. It was M S Dhoni’s lightning quick stumping that had everyone in paroxysms of delight.
It was a thriller of a match – SRH tying with MI’s 162 meant that the match went over into the super over.
After Jasprit Bumrah did a great job restricting the batsmen to just 8 in the super over, Pandya came out and smashed a six off the first ball of the over. This match cements MI’s position in the playoffs.
The Punjab team made 183 but KKR were able to get there losing just 3 wickets and a couple of overs to spare. Sam Curran’s 24 ball 55, with 22 of those runs coming in the last over of Harry Gurney; was a revelation.
Right now, we know that CSK, MI and DC have already made the playoffs. Over the coming matches, we shall know which of the three teams: SRH, KKR and RR will be the one to join them.
