Indian Women at Pole Position – With Three Consecutive Wins in the T20 World Cup

The Indian campaign for the 2020 Women’s T20 World Cup began on a positive note when the Indian women beat the Australians quite convincingly in the first match of the tournament. After this, the Indian women proceeded to beat the Bangladesh and the New Zealand teams as well. We’ve discovered a new powerhouse of talent in Shafali Verma and the irrepressible Jemimah Rodrigues is in a viral dance video as well. Here’s the lowdown:

India took on Bangladesh

The Indian women scored 142 while losing six wickets. Opener Shafali Verma's 39 off just 17 balls was the top contribution, with Jemimah Rodrigues making 34 off 37.

India won by 18 runs

Bangladesh could manage only 124 for 8 in their 20 overs. Poonam Yadav picked up three wickets with Shikha Pandey and Arundhati Reddy getting two each.

Player of the match

Shafali Verma is just 16 years old. Her quick fire knock which included 2 boundaries and 4 heaves over the fence won her the Player of the Match award.

Rising star

Some see her as a young Sehwag – one to watch out for  in times to come.

India’s third match was against New Zealand on Thursday 27 February. The Indian team scored 133 for the loss of eight wickets. The Kiwis narrowly lost by three runs; losing six wickets.

Shafali shone again

The 16 year old once again top scored with 46 runs in 34 balls and bagged yet another player of the match award.

Meanwhile

She is of the live wires of the team and now something of a social media star as well. While she contributed on the field with the bat, she took a little time off for some lighthearted fun – roping in a security person as well.

Going through to the semi final

The Indians take on the Sri Lankans on Saturday. However, the three wins on the trot make the Indian women the only unbeaten side in the tournament so far. With 6 points on the board and pole position in Group A, India has booked itself a berth in the semifinal of the 2020 T20 Women’s World Cup.
