What Would You Do If It Was Raining Cash?

It is something that most of us can see only in our imaginations or in films: someone has a crazy idea or goofs up and suddenly there are high-value bills of cash flying through the air for anyone to catch if they can. Something like this happened on a US highway. This was obviously fascinating because the video has over 1.9 million views.

Mostly this happens in movies

It is usually a cinematic ploy to demonstrate the greed or decency of people.

Money flying on a highway

The stuff that looks like confetti or pieces of paper flying in the air? Those are currency notes. This happened on an Atlanta highway when the door of an armoured truck carrying cash swung open and the cash flew out.

Picking up trash?

What about the cars parked by the side? Are they helping pick up trash? Not so much. They are the people who decided to stop and help themselves.

Another video

Another twitter user posted this video of people who trying to collect as much cash as possible. This tweet posed an ethical question: would you do this?

For some the answer was clear

This was money just lying around… waiting to be picked up.

Maybe get some help

This Twitter user wanted to sweep it all up.

Or maybe this:

This bright spark thought that a vacuum cleaner would help him get the money quicker and more efficiently.

Some people were like…

…A lot of people responded with sentiments akin to “I wish this happened to me”.

And some were like…

They were cursing getting stuck in traffic everyday – except on the one day it could have been beneficial.

“Never happens to me!”

This is the sort of freak occurrence that rarely every happens. To anyone.

Quick, get the cash!

Clearly they would be moving very fast collecting as much cash as possible. Its free cash, after all.

Some did this

There were those who decided that the right thing to do would be to return the cash to the authorities.

This is technically theft

Just because it was lying around, the cash cannot just be taken by anyone. The reasonable assumption is that it belongs to someone and must be returned to the authorities to find who the rightful owner is. Another tweet helpfully pointed out that that when a similar incident had happened elsewhere, the authorities had tracked down the freeloaders by checking the car licence plate numbers. So perhaps dishonesty doesn’t pay, after all and there really isn’t any such thing as a free lunch.
