Like Cats? Dubai Has a Unique Cat Film Festival for You

Some of us may be dog lovers but some of us are dedicated, cat lovers. Now if you're from the latter category and nothing can bring a smile to the face as surely as the video of a frisky little kitten, this one is for you. Dubai is having a cat-themed film festival – so this one is for all the cat lovers out there who think there are too many dog movies but not enough cat films!

Cat Film Festival

This is an international venture dedicated to “Bringing the joy of cat videos to the masses and raising money for cats in need.” They go through various cat video contributions and other sources on the net to collate the best and screen them. This organisation is working with Cinema Akil an independent film theatre in Alserkal Avenue to screen a cat film festival.

3 day event

There will be several cat-themed films shown as well as a 70-minute compilation of the best cat videos. The idea is to provide cat lovers with a community setting within which to enjoy the screening.

Naoko Ogigami’s Rent-A-Cat

The acclaimed comedy drama has featured in various film festivals and is a story about a woman who rents out cats to those who are lonely. This 2012 film will be screened on Friday, 9 August at 9.30 PM and on 10 August at 7.30 PM.

Turkish documentary Kedi

This is a documentary film about Istanbul’s stray cats. Time magazine had named it as one of 2017’s top films. It follows the lives of seven cats called Sari, Duman, Bengü, Aslan Parçasi, Gamsiz, Psikopat, and Deniz and the people who love and care for those cats. The movie will be screened on Thursday 8th August at 10.15 PM and then on Satuday at 5.30 PM.

French film A Cat in Paris

This animated film traces the story of a cat who helps a young woman to uncover a mystery. The movie was nominated for the best animated feature Oscar and has won other awards. This movie will be screened on Friday 9th August at 5.30 PM and then on Saturday at 3.45 PM.

Japanese film The Cat Returns

This is also an animation film that tells the story of little Haru Yoshioka who has the special talent of being able to speak with cats. She saves a cat who turns out to be the prince of the cat kingdom, who then wants to marry her. The movie will be screened on 9 August at 3.30 PM and then on Saturday at 10 PM.
