Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week – Find Out All about the Annual Event

The Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week is an event created to offer a global platform for advancing sustainable development all over the world. With about 38,000 people attending the event which attracts 850 exhibiting companies representing about 175 countries and 15 billion dollars’ worth of deals announced, this is the biggest event of its kind not just in the Middle East but anywhere in the world.

Some background

The Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week brings together industry leaders, policy makers and tech experts as well as those working to create sustainable practices to create solutions and strategies, share knowledge and drive progress. Previous participants of the event have been members of royalty, ministers of state and industry leaders. Future mobility, energy and climate change, water conservation, biotech and tech for good are some of the areas that the event concentrates on.

Industry convergence

The theme for the 2019 event is ‘Industry Convergence: Accelerating Sustainable Development’. The event started on 12th January and will continue till 19th January 2019 It will include panel discussions on pressing issues about sustainability, examine innovations and find ways to arm the youth with the knowledge and tools to create sustainable practices to counter climate change, meet world energy needs and water shortage issues.

Opening address

The event opened with a special message from China’s President Xi Jinping Xi Jinping, delivered by his representative Yang Jiechi. Calling the Gulf countries natural allies of China, Jeichi said that his country would work with the UAE to build a beautiful, clean world and work towards creating a more sustainable world. He said that “green, low-carbon sustainable development has become an important part of a successful economic transformation” for China.

In this tweet the sheikh spoke about the aims of the sustainability week; the establishment of sustainable global growth in the energy sector together with heads of state and of companies.

Highlights of the first day

The Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week showcased CLIX and the AED73 million to be invested in the initiative. The Abu Dhabi integrated energy model was unveiled by the department of energy. The UAE’s role in renewable energy projects in the Caribbean was also touched upon.

Aims of ADSW 2019

New frontiers in sustainable energy, women empowerment, energy transition, sustainable agriculture, zero waste, developing skills, new tech, protecting environment, a diversified energy mix, new ideas, protecting oceans… these are just some of the aims of the event.
