Leh Gears Up For The 'Kumbh of Himalayas' Once In 12 Years

With an unimaginable combination of  snow-clad mountains and lakes around, Ladakh is one of the best places to visit in India. Know about 'Kumbh of Himalayas'

'Kumbh of Himalayas' which takes place once in 12 years is all set to start this week at the 17th century Hemis monastery of Drukpa lineage, the largest such in the Himalayas. The festival brings in more of the international crowd with lots of dance, music, prayers and performances to see.

The Hemis

Hemis, the biggest monastery in Ladakh will celebrate one thousand years of Buddhist yogi Naropa's visit with a festival of dance, music and religious teachings which would last for one month. The festival will start on 16th September, 2016.

Attracting tourist

The organizers of the meal have said that celebration of the 1000th birth of Naropa is likely to attract more than 200,000 devotees. Apart from foreign tourists, other devotees would be from Bhutan, Nepal, Ladakh and nearby areas.

It is said that Naropa was an 11th-century saint who is believed to be born as the prince in a royal family in Kashmir.

Celebrities attending the festival

Apart from the common devotees, there are many celebrities who are looking forward to attend the festival. This time, Hollywood stars Michelle Yeoh and Robert Kennedy Junior will also be attending, among others.

Born in the monkey year

It is believed to Naropa was born in the Monkey year, which comes every twelve years, of the Tibetan calendar. A rare sight of a rare public display of six bone ornaments and the unfurling of the ancient silk Thangka of Buddha Amitabha, along with the largest silk brocade in the Himalayas, is among the main highlights of the Naropa festival.

Guinness World record

According to the festival authorities, it is said that the festival is all set to beat the Guinness World Record for the largest projected image on to the famed Hemis monastery, 40 km from Leh. The last record was achieved by the Moscow International Festival "Circle of Light" on October 4, 2015, on a projection on Ministry of Defense building.

Kumbh Mela is something which is very holy and well known. Many people have experienced Kumbh Mela but people have no idea about the Kumbh Mela in the Himalayas. The festival is extremely holy and  the devotees will experience a high level of spirituality here. Because lots of people will gather to see big ceremonies in the Himalayas, it is called as Himalayan Kumbh Mela or the Kumbh of Himalaya.
