No longer are we gathered before a TV screen at a particular time waiting for a fave serial to air its latest episode. The internet has made it possible for us to watch what we want, where and when we want. We can watch the series slowly or binge watch as we want. Game of Thrones is far from the only web series; there are many others that are gripping, entertaining, and far more relatable. These series have an ethos closer to home, to the present time and to reality:
Probably the biggest web series ever launched in India and suitable only for adults, Sacred Games stars Saif Ali Khan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Radhika Apte. It is directed by Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane. The first season was dark, disturbing and riveting. As yet there isn't much news about a second series; though Netflix has announced Season 2; tweeting “The worst is yet to come”.
One of Amazon Prime’s first big ticket India based shows, Breathe stars R. Madhavan, Amit Sadh and others. It is a story about ordinary men thrust into a strange situation; a crime drama about love for family, murder and investigative policing.
A violent story about the mafia don of Mirzapur, this crime thriller for Amazon Prime revolves around drugs, weapons and gunda raaj of the local mafia, sex scandals and good men turning to crime. Starring Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal, Vikrant Massey, it’s a dark, gritty, unrelenting look at crime’s seamy underbelly.
Made in Heaven is an Amazon Prime show about more than just the big fat Indian wedding. Starring Arjun Mathur and Sobhita Dhulipala, this is about hypocrisy, taboos and just about human vicissitudes. It also explores themes of homosexuality quite truthfully. Each of the 9 episodes of season 1 was highly watchable and audiences have been clamouring for season 2.
It is tender, funny, relatable journey into a relationship; starring Mithila Palkar (of Karwan fame) and Dhruv Sehgal. The Netflix show has aired 2 seasons so far. Take a look at the Little Things season 2 announcement to get an idea of what to expect.
Netflix describes this to-be-aired series as a prequel based on the Baahubali movie franchise and on ‘Anand Neelakantan’s book. This will be set in a time before Amarendra Baahubali's reign as king and about Queen Sivagamini and her empire; the legacy of Mhishmati. This promises to be a fantasy drama, much like an Indian Game of Thrones; but way sanskaari.
This one comes to Netflix on 14th June 2019. Starring Huma Qureshi and Siddharth, Leila is directed by Deepa Mehta and is based on a novel by Prayaag Akbar.
