The 91st Academy Awards, the 2019 Oscars grabbed eyeballs all over the world. The awards were done and dusted and set the Twitterati chatting. We look at what got the most attention and some of the fun bits of the only global film awards that matter.
Freddie Mercury may no longer be with us, but his music certainly is; as are some of the coolest ageing rockers (do Roger Taylor and Brian May rock white hair or what). So they began with the iconic We will rock you (typically) followed by We Are the Champions and there wasn’t a foot that didn’t stomp in response to that tribute to Freddie and to the movie Bohemian Rhapsody.
Brandley Cooper and Lady Gaga performed the hit single Shallow from their movie A Star is Born. More than the stirring vocals, it was the couples’ chemistry that people reacted to. People were sure that the ‘incredibly intimate’ performance would end in a passionate kiss. Some thought that Cooper would undoubtedly be spending the night outside his marital bed.
A documentary jointly made by Guneet Monga won the Oscar for best short documentary. The film is set in India and covers the taboo subject of menstrual periods and the struggle of some women to overcome these taboos.
When Regina King (winner of the best supporting actor Oscar) had trouble with her voluminous gown, Captain America, aka Chris Evans was at hand to save the day.
Billy Porter rocked this gown-tuxedo on awards night. He “wanted to shatter expectations with his show-stopping Oscar red carpet look” and he clearly did that!
He started out thanking his mother and saying that his father was watching from above. He thanked Queen for their legacy, the opportunity to be in Bohemian Rhapsody and to play Freddie Mercury. The idea of an Egyptian-origin actor playing an Indian-origin Parsi who wins an Oscar for playing the lead singer of a British band… that was just a beautiful story played out on the Oscar stage about another beautiful story.
Spike Lee had been nominated before but this was the first actual win as director for Best Adapted Screenplay award for BlacKkKlansman. His acceptance speech also had a sting in the tail for the President of the United States.
When Green Book was announced film of the year, Spike Lee was seen leaving his seat in anger. He later said this.
Black Panther was the first Marvel film to get an Oscar, there were many other reasons why this years’ Oscars celebrated diversity. Check out some of the highlights to know more.
