Jalebi – Is This A ‘Complicated’ Love Story You Want to Watch?

It’s been a couple of years since the last release of the production company owned by brothers Mahesh and Mukesh Bhatt, Vishesh Films. The brothers Bhatt now bring us Jalebi. Described as a romantic drama, the movie stars Rhea Chakraborty, Varun Mitra and Digangana Suryavanshi in the main roles and releases next month on 12 October. Check out the Jalebi movie trailer, reactions to it and to the music album.

The poster already caused a stir

The poster is clearly a throwback to a famous photo dating back from the 1950s. The older monochrome photo is that of an American soldier dangled down from the window of a train; kissing his sweetheart goodbye as he goes to war.

The memes followed

As soon as the poster was released, it became viral and spawned a series of jokes and memes. There were some hilarious tweets with the ‘expectation vs. reality’ tagline.

Jalebi trailer

The film trailer seems to indicate a love story about two young people who fall for each other against the backdrop of Old Delhi and then proceed to navigate through an emotional minefield wrought by personal aspirations and circumstances.

A remake

The film is a remake of the Bengali blockbuster of 2016 called Praktan. Some of the tweeple found similarities in the original and its Hindi remake.

Bhatt the storyteller

Over the years, Mahesh Bhatt has told us some wonderful stories. Two that instantly come to mind are the moving Shabana Azmi - Kulbhushan Kharbanda starrer Arth and the fun, frothy Aamir Khan and Pooja Bhatt starrer Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahi. Later years did not yield the same quality of films from the Bhatt stables but many seem to have new hope from this new film.

Or not

While many anticipate the movie as an emotional, possibly tragic love story, others seem to have fewer expectations of the movie.

Why ‘Jalebi’?

In the trailer Varun Mitra’s character calls his love ‘meri jalebi’ but other than that its not clear why the film is named after the Indian sweet. The fact that the tagline of the film is the everlasting taste of love seems to offer up some clues. Perhaps ‘jalebi’ refers to the fact that this appears to be the story of a complicated and tortuous relationship.

The music release

The film’s music has received generally positive reviews. The song tum se appears to be in keeping with the usual type of romantic ballads we hear these days with such regularity: a soulful voice, mellow instrumentation, and a languid pace.
