They are not quite the Oscars (they are described as the drunken siblings of the Oscars) but Golden Globes are nevertheless among the most prestigious movie awards in the world. What happens at the Golden Globes, impacts the fortunes of films and filmmakers massively. So when they hand out those distinctive golden orbs, the world takes notice. This year was a little chaotic, what with much of the ceremony being virtual/online.
Tina Fey and Amy Poehler were the hosts for the evening. Apart from the funny bits, there were some scathing funny bits where the two women took on the power politics of the movie industry among other things.
They were socially distanced, but that didn’t mean they couldn’t have their Red Carpet moment.
Sacha Baron Cohen’s Borat (2006) and Borat Subsequent Moviefilm (2020) are among the most outré, extreme films ever made. The movie had three nominations including best actress in musical or comedy and went on to win two awards: for best musical or comedy movie and best actor in musical or comedy film. In his acceptance speech, Cohen mercilessly sends up Rudy Giuliani.
Catherine O’Hara from Schitt’s Creek won the award for the best TV comedy actress. During the acceptance speech, her husband was seen fiddling with his phone. He was actually trying to play an applause track for his wife but it didn’t go exactly as planned.
Chadwick Bose received the award for the Best Actor but posthumously. His wife accepted with award remotely for him for his role in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, a film set in the 1920s. it was an emotional time for everyone, with Bose having passed away just months back from colon cancer.
Jeff Daniels was nominated for his role in the miniseries The Comey Rule. Apart from all else, what caught the eye were his casual attire and look and the number of doors in the background. What’s up with that, asked the tweeple.
Like Daniels, Jason Sudeikis and Bill Murry also decided not to dress up for the event and were seen to be chilling at home wearing whatever the f**k they wanted.
The tweeple loved Jared Leto’s look – particularly that flower.
This story about a woman in her sixties who decides to travel the West of the country after losing everything to the Great Recession won big. It won the award for the best movie and best director and had also been nominated for the movie screenplay lead actress.
If someone’s phone failed to play applause, Daniel Kaluya had a mic malfunction during his acceptance speech for his role in Judas and the Black Messiah.
Josh O'Connor and Emma Corrin playing Prince Charles and Lady Diana in the Netflix series The Crown won the Golden Globes for best actor and actress in Drama TV series.
The ‘Hulk’ actor used his time for his Golden Globe acceptance speech to speak about healing the earth and about healing differences between people.
