What to Watch on Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hotstar this October

I love Octobers! It is the first sign of our brutal summers relinquishing their relentless stranglehold on my life and a general uptick in my levels of happiness. Those who know me will agree that I am much less irritable and an altogether nicer person from October onwards. Enough about me! There are reasons other than more hospitable weather for October to recommend itself. Here are some movies and shows to catch this October on streaming platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime and Hotstar:

Serious Men

This Nawazuddin Siddiqui-starrer released on 2 October and is a sharply satirical look at the economic and caste hierarchy that continues to exist in our society. Siddiqui is Ayyan Mani in this Netflix film. He is an ordinary guy with an extraordinary ambition to raise his own child out of the mediocrity of his own existence. Funny and poignant, this one has largely positive reviews.

Ginny Weds Sunny

What else do we Punjabis have? One is emotions and the other paneer!  The line from the trailer cracked me up! This Netflix movie starring Yami Gautam and Vikrant Massey is a rom-com to look forward to. The film follows the trials and tribulations of the girl who doesn’t want an arranged marriage and releases on Netflix on 9 October 2020.

Bad Boy Billionaires

This controversial Netflix India show has released three episodes so far. It features some of India’s most glamorous and famous fraudsters.  Vijay Mallya, Nirav Modi and Subrata Ray of Sahara. The documentary series peeks into the lavish lifestyles of these stylish crooks and their modus operandi of bribing people, taking ever-bigger loans and leaving behind others to clean up their messes.

Borat Subsequent Moviefilm

Sacha Baron Cohen in and as Borat, the 2006 film was pretty unforgettable for myriad different reasons. The British comic is arguably one of the most outrageous filmmakers in the world; his mockumentary on the American gun lobby being a case in point. Borat Subsequent Moviefilm releases on 26 October on Amazon Prime and like his earlier films; will include a disguised Cohen playing pranks on people - particularly bigots and racists. The timing of the film just before the American presidential elections is interesting.

Mirzapur 2

Mirzapur returns to Prime Video with Season 2 on 23 October 2020. The first season of the series about the criminal mafia in Uttar Pradesh was extremely violent and full of profanity but very well received as complex narrative involving many plots, subplots and interesting characters. Get ready for season two in the badlands of UP with Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal, Divyendu Sharma, Vikrant Massey, Shweta Tripathi, Shriya Pilgaonkar, Harshita Gaur and others.

Bahut Hua Sammaan

This film starring Raghav Juyal, Abhishek Chauhan, Sanjay Mishra, Ram Kapoor, Nidhi Singh and others released on Disney+ Hotstar on 2 October 2020. In the film, we have a Bak***d Baba and some unemployed failed engineers looking to rob a bank. There is the feisty female police officer and all manner of mayhem in this film that has decent reviews on the whole.

The Call of the Wild

Harrison Ford stars in this film based on a 1903 novel about the adventures of a dog who is abducted and transported to a different life as a sledge dog. The film was released last year and now comes to the Disney Hotstar streaming platform.
