Viewers will recall the movie Shubh Mangal Saavdhan which took on the issue of erectile dysfunction. This was brave considering the stigma around mentioning or even acknowledging this common sexual problem in our society. Now Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan takes on another social issue --- boldly, now after the striking down of section 377 – that of homophobia. Starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Jitendra Kumar, Neena Gupta and Gajraj Rao this is definitely one to watch out for.
The trailer starts out one of the common issues surrounding homosexuality; that it is a choice rather than a biological imperative. It goes on to detail family reactions to two men in a same-sex relationship. The trailer promises many laugh out loud moments while taking a long hard look at the rampant misconceptions and prejudices about homosexuality that exist in society.
Actor Siddharth expresses his appreciation for lead actor Ayushmann Khurrana.
This is one actor seen to repeatedly take on various social issues: sperm donation, caste inequality, mature love, male pattern baldness and now homophobia.
Audiences have largely lavished praise on Khurrana’s bold choices in films as well as his ability to faithfully portray each character that he plays.
It is certainly a sign of the times that the filmmakers took an iconic scene from an iconic (hetero) love story and applied it to this same sex love story.
The theme of the film speaks to and gives comfort to a large, silent segment of our society. The movie normalises same-sex love and tries to dispel the misinformation and stigma attached to it.
Getting the families to get on board with an unconventional relationship seems to be the main conflict of the story.
He may be something of a superstar in the world of web series, but Jitendra Kumar is less recognised in mainstream movies. His role as Aman Tripathi is definitely one to watch out for.
We saw Neena Gupta and Gajraj Rao in Badhai Ho, a tender, sensitive portrayal of mature love. The audiences have high expectations from them yet again.
This is a mainstream movie that makes no bones about two men in love, expressing that love --- this is certainly a first for Bollywood.
There is no cure for this disease, says Khurrana’s character Kartik Singh in the trailer.
Wasting time on video games --- a universal phenomenon.
This line also lends itself to varied situations.
Well maybe not.
…Of a different sort.
Someone also make the inevitable cricket joke.
…The engineering joke. All in all, Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan is creating a buzz for all the right reasons and audiences have high expectations of the movie when it releases a month from now on 21 February 2020.
