As readers would, by now know, I am not exactly a genius at Maths in general (algebra in particular). So when people were delighted at the AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education) announcement that maths and physics would not be compulsory for engineering admissions, I could totally identify with their joy. However many of the tweeple were less than pleased. Here’s how they reacted to the news:
AICTE has announced rule changes that will allow 11th and 12 class students who haven’t taken physics and maths to opt for engineering at undergrad levels.
How can an engineer manage without maths and physics, wondered the tweeple.
…Maths is no longer important?
Difficult as it is for people such as me to understand, there are those who love maths and who would want to opt for it anyway.
How is this possible? And are we to see this in future, asked the tweeple.
This change will create more opportunities for students who did not opt for PCM.
They thought this was a stupid idea that would dilute engineering courses.
How can a student who hasn’t studied maths and physics cope with the engineering curriculum?
This is applicable only for some engineering streams and in other cases, bridge courses will be offered to help students achieve proficiency in subjects they may not have studied in depth.
Maybe this was made by an engineer who was clueless about these two subjects.
What about students who already went through the grind?
…Students who already did the hard work are annoyed.
Those who have completed their engineering degrees are wondering what’s going on.
According to the new rules, students who have done business studies, computer science etc. in school will also be able to opt for engineering. Some feel that it's all immaterial because jobs are difficult to find in any case.
So arts students can opt for a medical degree, asked some of the tweeple sarcastically.
People thought that we would have very bad engineers without proper grounding in maths and physics.
Perhaps these guys – Newton, Einstein and so on will also be annoyed that AICTE has declared maths and physics to be not compulsory for engineering degrees.
