Jhansi Ki Rani

Of course, the first name has to be hers. She was one of the people who went up in arms during the Mutiny of 1857. A woman who fought carrying her young son tied to her back. A woman who fought to kill or be killed. A woman who avenged the death of her husband. A woman who fought to bring back honour and independence to her land. Yes, she was all that.

She walked the march at the tender age of 8, and India knew she would do great things when she grew up. Sure enough, Usha Mehta launched the radio station “Secret Congress Radio”, which facilitated communication between members, and got four years in jail for that. Multiple actions and jail terms, failed to dim the light of her passion for the country’s independence.

A member of an upper class Brahmin family, she met, fell in love and married a Muslim gentleman against all odds. Disowned by her own family, but in love with her country and her partner, she conducted and participated in hunger strikes and rallies, and went to jail multiple times. She did not lose courage and kept on fighting for India. She earned the title of “Grand Old Lady of India”.

Words alone cannot elucidate the sheer will of these courageous women. This woman’s day, we salute these brave hearts to who we owe our freedom.
