She was born on 18 July, 1982 in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand to Ashok Chopra and Madhu Chopra, who were physicians in the Indian Army.

Actresses Parineeti Chopra, Meera Chopra and Mannara are her cousins. Due to her parents job, her family relocated to many places like Delhi, Chandigarh, Ambala, Ladakh, Lucknow, Bareilly, and Pune.

She was a bright student in her school and attended many schools due to relocation, among which some of the schools were La Martiniere Girls' School in Lucknow and St. Maria Goretti College in Bareilly.

After completing her high school, she participated and won the local "May Queen" beauty pageant, followed by the Femina Miss India contest of 2000, in which she finished second and became the Femina Miss India World.

After which, she went on to the Miss World pageant, where she was crowned as Miss World 2000 and became the heart throb of Bollywood.
