Why Do They Need Us To Set Difficult Passwords? Here’s How People Responded

You know how it is: we are trying to set a password that we (hopefully) will not forget within seconds of having set it. But! They don’t let us make it easy for ourselves. They want at least one capital letter, they want a number, they want some other non-alphanumeric symbol, and the blood of an endangered species!  This tweet about weak and strong passwords started a conversation:

“My memory is weak”

Please let me set a weak password because my memory is weak too, says this tweet. Many of us would agree.

“Complexify”

All that added password-related stress and complexity in life is because of would-be hackers and fraudsters. So we must “complexify” passwords and suffer irritation today to prevent problems tomorrow.

Some do this

But then they have to remember which remix was used where? Still too complicated for me.

And some

Some remove all complexity

The struggle…

…Is real!

This solution

We know the military alphabet is Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta and so on --- this might work.

But!

That may not be safe either apparently.

Can’t think up any

All the clever/workable/memorable passwords are already used – so now what?

The suggested passwords

The passwords suggested by the system are the worst! Who on earth can remember something complicated like &%6sdfg&%@!

This is exasperating!

Then they tell us we can’t use a password we've used before which is truly annoying.

Too many passwords

It seems we need them for so many different things!

Many suggested this

A password manager – but does the app need a password? Like a master password? And what if you forget that?

That it feels like

It feels annoying and attacking to be told what sort of password we need to have.

Don't tell us what to do!

When the system tells us what kind of password we can or cannot have, the reaction is like – it is my password, I’ll decide what kind of password I should have.
