Smart Bathmat, Smart Mirror, Smart Shower – Future of the Bathroom?

I used to think that an electric toothbrush is just such a lazy person’s gadget. I mean how lazy does one have to be to use a battery-operated brush I thought. But maybe a smart toothbrush isn't such a bad idea after all? And maybe it isn't a bad idea to have a smart mirror, a smart shower, a smart bathmat and so on? The way that technology has taken over our world, it will take over our bathrooms in times to come, if these futuristic bathroom gadgets are anything to go by

Smart Mirror

This is not just a mirror but rather like a personal skincare and health consultant looking back from the bathroom mirror. This device has various sensors such as a temperature scanner, UV analysis functionality, a camera etc. The ‘mirror’ evaluates your appearance and makes suggestions for health and lifestyle improvements.  It has face recognition, voice command and touchless interaction, magnifier, time-lapse, makeup tutorials, vitals check etc., and is connected with one's other gadgets.

Smart shower

This is a voice and phone activated shower. The shower is voice-activated – so you can just tell it to start. The dedicated app works with Google Assistant, Siri or Alexa to create presets and so on. Best of all, it can be programmed to start at a specific temperature – so there’s none of the shock of that stone-cold blast of water and no water wastage while you adjust the shower to a comfortable temperature.

Smart bathtub

This is a part of the Kohler Smart Home collection and will hit markets sometime in the future. This smart tub is based on the Japanese concept of forest bathing and is called the Stillness Bath. It creates a spa-like environment with therapy fragrances, mood lighting and a fog effect. The bathtub overflows and the water drips onto the provided ‘Hinoki’ wood moat to create that restful sound of flowing water. The idea is to soothe and invigorate all the senses while bathing.

Smart toilet brush

This gadget can be ordered via a Kickstarter project. It is called Goodpapa and claims to be the ‘world’s smartest toilet brush’. The cleaning and rotating mode of the brush is activated at the touch of a switch. The brush has a self-cleaning mode that is activated after its done cleaning. This gadget has a 1.5-hour battery life.

Smart bathroom mat

This devious device isn't just a bathmat but also a weighing scale. The mat has a built-in footprint recognition function. It records but doesn’t display the weight – apparently, this takes the ‘moral judgement’ out of the whole process of weighing oneself. The mat also detects the composition of the body; i.e. fat, muscle etc. and also records the changing shoe sizes of kids. While some of these bathroom gadgets are not yet available for purchase, they are all interesting for sure.
