Remember The BlackBerry? The Tweeple Do

There was a time when the BlackBerry was a gadget that only the well-heeled had; something that was flaunted by the busy and the important and the tech-savvy. Looking back it was a clunky device, with limited functions. But that was then, and this is now – it was announced that BlackBerry phones would stop functioning from early January. Some were very nostalgic. Take a look at the memes tweeple shared:

End of an era

The BlackBerry would cease to function from 4 January 2022, it was announced.

It was cool then

It is history now.

It’s been 20 years

A lot of people are going to miss it

Really miss it

It was a smart phone before phones were smart

It was a market leader

There was a time when the BlackBerry ruled the roost – with iPhone trailing it.

Android and Apple happened

And struck a death-knell for the BlackBerry suggests this tweet.

The BlackBerry story

There was a peak after which there was a steady decline.

RIP

As of this January, people are writing its obituary.

People were nostalgic

Even sentimental!

Wait!

There were people using this still?

It would have been difficult

…To say goodbye.

There was a time

People really loved this phone – during its time, it was futuristic, exclusive and desirable.

Not any more

The BlackBerry will now take its place in heaven along with other beloved entities.

The 90s are gone

So is a lot else, including comedienne Betty White, who recently passed away at the age of 99.

A moment of silence…

…For technology that was.

Cutting edge?

It seems primitive now, with no touchscreen, a cramped keyboard and clunky user experience.

People had loved it!

It was then such a step-up from the sort of phones that were in use at the time it was launched, that people loved it.

This!

The phones will soon become paperweights, as this tweet says – more electronic waste in a world drowning in electronic waste.

Goodbye Blackberry

Technology is constantly changing, evolving, improving. Who knows what will replace the really smart smartphones we’re using today; the deeply intimate relationship we have with our hand-clutched devices.
