A small town Jatt boy that made India proud. Vijendra from a tender age displayed the talent for boxing, but what really got him that ‘Kick’ was the Arjuna Award received by Raj Kumar Sangwan in 1996. So, let’s see the star in making.

When he was first recognized

His hidden talent was first recognized by Bhiwani’s Boxing Club coach, Jagdish Singh. It was here, Vijender started his training and lead up to the Sub Junior Nationals and won the silver medal.

 

Turn of events from 2006

From 2006 things started looking up for Vijendra. He won the Bronze Medal at the Asian Games in Doha, and then followed that up with a Silver Medal at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne.

 

Beijing Olympics, 2008

After 2006, came the Beijing Olympics in 2008. This was the stage where he became a bonofide national superstar by participating in the middleweight category, winning a bronze medal and earning millions of Indian fans. He became the first boxer from India to win a medal at the Olympics. Later he also won another bronze medal at the World Amateur Boxing Championship and even became No. 1 in the International Boxing Association’s middle weight ranking.

 

First professional fight, June 2015

In June 2015, Vijender became the first Indian boxer to go pro. On 10th October 2015, he fought his first professional fight against Britain’s Sonny Whiting, whom he ended up knocking out.

 

Bollywood debut

But his talent was not limited only to wrestling. His debut in Bollywood with ‘Fugly’ was highly appreciated and got some further more fans.

We guess Vijendra Singh is now all set for the upcoming Olympics and we hope to see some rocking performance there.
