Updates from Tokyo – India Progresses in Boxing, Archery, Badminton, Hockey

After Mirabai Chanu winning a Silver Medal quite dramatically on day one of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, some other medal hopes have been extinguished while others still are alive. P V Sindhu in badminton, Pooja Rani in boxing and Deepika Kumari in archery have progressed and the men’s hockey team has advanced to the quarterfinal.

In archery, India’s medal hopes were kept alive by Deepika Kumari who managed to get the better of Jennifer Munico-Fernandez to get to the pre-quarterfinal stage.

She is ranked word no. 1 and is now part of the top 16 players left in the fray.

Atanu Das

Atanu Das is the husband of Deepika and the duo has both progressed to the pre-quarterfinal stage. This was the result of a stunning win over two-time Olympic champion Oh Jin Hyek. He credited his wife for the win.

This is him two Olympics back. Indian archery’s famous couple was denied the chance to perform for the mixed team event with his wife, however. The two are now the only Indian archers left in contention.

Pooja Rani is through to the quarterfinal

In the 75 kg category, Pooja Rani beat her competitor comprehensively.

Tough match ahead

All of India is cheering her on as she goes on to the quarterfinal. She is assured of a medal if she wins just one more match.

Lovlina Borgohain

On Wednesday, Lovlina Borgonain beat her German opponent to enter the quarter-final. She takes on Chen Nien-chin of Chinese Taipei on 30th July for the quarter-final.

Satish Kumar also beat his opponent in the 91 kg category to sail into the quarter final.

Three Indian boxers in the quarters

Mary Kom also reached the quarterfinals, however, she lost to Ingrit Valencia from Columbia. There are still three medal hopes for India in boxing. 

Very slim chance for the women

The women had lost their first match in the competition but still have a sliver of hope to make the playoffs if they win their next match.

P V Sindhu marches on

The former silver medalist has successfully beaten her opponent in straight games to march into the quarter finals.

In great form

A billion hopes are pinned on Sindhu, who looks to be in great form after her emphatic wins. She will take on Akane Yamaguchi from Japan in her quarterfinal match on 30th July.

The big one

India took on defending champions Argentina in the men's hockey event.

The Indian men comprehensively beat Argentina 3-1 to claim a place in the quarterfinals.

Watch out for Avinash Sable, Jabir MP, Dutee Chand and the mixed relay event tomorrow at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
