The Mighty Fall, New Legends are Born – Continuing the FIFA World Cup Saga in Tweets

After the shock exit of Germany from the FIFA World Cup 2018, there have been more shockers that continue to rock the football fans’ universe. Some of the most popular players of the game – Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have performed dismally under par and worse, their teams Portugal and Argentina are now out of the competition as well. Uruguay defeated Portugal and Russia shocked Spain. It’s all happening at FIFA 2018!

Exit Messi, Ronaldo

As the much vaunted Argentineans lost their match to France and Portugal lost to Uruguay, the two high ranked teams exited the competition… as did two of the most beloved players in the tournament.

Some fans remained steadfast

Pointing out the fact that it takes an entire team (not an individual player) to win or lose a match, Messi fans came out in strong show of support for their idol.

The goat debate

For the uninitiated, GOAT stands for Greatest Of All Time. Messi and Ronaldo both have their committed fan following and both camps claim their own GOAT. Many don’t care who is greater, simply felt sad that both players are out now.

Past GOAT

While some were glued to the action on the field, others were more interested in what was happening off it; particularly the extremely emotional reactions of Argentina team manager and past GOAT himself Diego Maradona.

The GOAT beaters

The (relatively) new kids on the block managed to pull off wins for their teams. Many viewers cheered not so much at how the mighty had fallen, as they cheered for the new stars on the firmament.

Going home

Too many on twitter seemed to be getting some perverse pleasure in the fact that the losing teams would now go home; particularly the star players.

Is Neymar going to be next?

Brazil’s Neymar is another player with about the same stature. With the Brazil team set to clash with Mexico today, people are looking forward to another big showdown and the possible exit of yet another big star.

#RESPECT

The Uruguayan player Edinson Cavani scored two goals that effectively put paid to Portugal’s hopes. However, Ronaldo earned the respect of people when he chose to help the injured man who is essentially his foe.

#Mbappe – a legend is born

So not only did he prove he is a star by decimating his opposition at the tender age of 19, he is also a lovely human being it would seem! “Mbappe's talent at the age of 19 is scary. The kid is playing like a World Class striker in his prime” said one tweet; many others thought that they had seen the birth of a true blue star in the #FRAARG game.

“Me at 19”

People shared many hilarious tweets about what they were doing (or not doing) at age 19 – to give some perspective to Mbappe's achievement.

Another big upset

Hosts Russia, were the lowest ranked team in the tournament but have performed above par so far. They created yet another upset by toppling the fancied Spanish team. Many fans were so happy, they didn’t care what Russia did or didn’t do from here on.

Boring?

While some suggested that the #ESPRUS match was fixed in favour of the Russians by Putin, others thought that the match was just boring!
