It is very heartening to hear of the ultra wealthy using their wealth and celebrity to help the underprivileged and marginalized. Some of the most wealthiest people in the world such as Bill Gates and Warren Buffet are well known for their philanthropy. Some of the world’s most elite athletes also concern themselves with various worthy causes. Recently, Roger Federer revealed his retirement plans, which included travel and continuing to fund the school system in Africa. We look at his plans as well as the philanthropic endeavors of other sportspersons:
The Roger Federer Foundation spent $13.5 million to open 81 schools in the tiny central African country of Malawi. According to some estimates, this would help to improve the lives of about 150,000 children in the country.
In March 2017, Federer also organised a fundraiser match to help raise money for his philanthropic organisation; which raised over $2.5 million. Similar matches have helped raised more money. Now with retirement being a possibility for the tennis superstar, it is likely that he will spend more time traveling.
After the Nepal earthquake of 2015, the football star had donated £5 million to help the victims. He sends out appeals on social media to ask people to make contributions to children’s charities, and helps out those in need, such as when he paid 60,000 Euros for a then month-old baby’s brain surgery.
Probably the best-known swimmer in the world, Phelps also contributes generously to worthy causes. He founded the Michael Phelps Foundation with the $1 million that he got from Speedo after he won his 8th gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. It promotes water safety, healthy living and the pursuit of dreams. Phelps supports causes such as HIV/AIDS, children, cancer, Parkinson’s disease and human rights as well.
The Lance Armstrong Foundation, and the "Livestrong" campaign have made a difference to millions of cancer survivors. Regardless of the cheating and doping controversies that shadow the cyclist’s brilliant career, he has used his fame and wealth more wisely than most. He has helped raise an estimated $470 million and helped about 2.5 million cancer survivors worldwide.
