Right now, as the country seems enveloped in uncertainty and unrest, there are little spots of joy and reasons to cheer. What slipped almost completely under the radar was the victory of the Indian Women's Junior Hockey team in a tri-nation series in Australia. Until a clip of the girls receiving applause on board their Air India flight home went viral, we had not heard about this.
The three national tournament featured Australia, India and New Zealand. The Indian team finished at the top of the points table to win the series.
The Indian team had collected seven points from four matches and won the series based on the number of goals scored.
The opening match against the New Zealand team in Canberra saw the Indian players comprehensively beat New Zealand 2-0 to seize the advantage.
The fourth and last match was won by the Australian team 2-1. The Indian women did put up a good fight and ultimately they won the series based on points earned and the number of goals scored.
The Indian team lifted the trophy playing a series abroad; beating the hosts Australia on their home turf as well as the New Zealand team.
This video taken on the plane on the way back home has gone viral. The young girls receive a big round of applause from the passengers on board the Air India flight, as the flight personnel explain their achievements over the PA system and lead the player bearing aloft the trophy. A great achievement for the team and a memorable flight home for all the others as well!
