We are in a world where conspiracy theories abound. Did you, for instance, know, that a significant percentage of Americans believe that the moon landings of 50 years ago were faked? Another of the biggest conspiracy theories is that of Area 51; which is based on the belief that the American government is hiding alien presence on earth from the general public. So widely is this believed, that the Facebook post “Storm Area 51, They Can’t Stop All of Us” went viral recently.
It is a Facebook group called “Shitposting cause im in shambles” that created an event for FRI, SEP 20 AT 3 AM PDT, called Storm Area 51. "They Can't Stop All of Us" said the post which invited RSVPs for the event at Area 51 Amargosa Valley, NV, United States. It was meant to be a joke, but the post reads “1.7M Going” and “1.3M Interested”.
For many years now, the military base in Nevada has been associated with extraterrestrial conspiracy theories. Thousands are convinced that the government/military is either harbouring or incarcerating aliens and not telling anyone about it.
There are those who believe the conspiracy theory and others who laugh at them.
There are many who are in perfect earnest about what began as a joke... and the jokes are many!
So the idea is that all these people will get together and storm area 51, which is the alleged secret home to aliens and ET activity. They will all finally find out what it is all about.
“If we naruto run, we can move faster than their bullets. Lets see them aliens.” Said the Facebook post.
This tweet helpfully demonstrates the Naruto running technique, with body bent forward and arms outstretched behind.
Meme makers found the plan to storm Area 51 deliciously meme-worthy.
ET, Steven Spielberg’s old classic featured in many tweets.
Some remembered this scene with Charlie Sheen in Hot Shots with the laughably tacky ‘aliens’.
People shared their own ideas about how the aliens would be waiting to be rescued or released.
Some joked about the difficulty of getting into a highly secure, well-guarded area.
While so many enthusiastically joined in the Storm Area 51 joke event, some tried to draw attention to other, more serious matters.
While everyone seemed to be having a blast with the jokes and memes the US Air Force decided to take no chances. While most people think of this as the biggest joke in the galaxy, there are undoubtedly some cretins planning to storm area 51 in right earnest. So it seemed safe to issue this notice.
As some prepare to storm Area 51 and others continue to make memes about it, enjoy this wildly viral video: an animated imagining of the storming of area 51, complete with Keanu Reeves Naruto running and the yodelling kid Mason Ramsey.
