With the wall to wall reportage and the social media frenzy that a single TV interview attracted in the past few days, we would think there's nothing else of consequence anywhere in the world. When Oprah met Meghan and Harry, suddenly everyone had an opinion about the British monarchy, racism, the victimhood of the most privileged etc. There were Op-Eds and articles written, TV debates and discussions and more – some even lost their jobs.
Meghan had alleged that she experienced racially charged behaviour from the British royal family. In the video, her brother in law William denies it.
Oh, that’s alright then – if the accused says they are not guilty let’s all just take their word for it, responded the tweeple in sarcasm. They also pointed this out.
The press has been divided over claims of racism made by Meghan. One view acknowledges racism in society and that someone feels discriminated against – even if it’s by the royal family, there is a responsibility to address that charge.
Many have dismissed the racism charge. Some have resigned from their positions as a result.
Piers Morgan said that Meghan Markle met him for drinks and then avoided him back in 2015. Morgan was called out for this on his own show.
Some feel that his recent dismissal of her racism charge and defence of the royal family is all about hurt male ego.
Morgan storming off his own set and subsequent resignation seemed to indicate as much.
Well I have to agree with this.
Some are wondering if ‘resignation’ is just the network allowing Morgan a face-saver after he was actually asked to step down.
Racist, entitled, misogynistic white men seem to behave similarly on both sides of the pond.
Amul chipped in with this cartoon. All the drama did remind one of the Indian saas-bahu serials.
On Indian Twitter, this video went viral. The add-on track matches remarkably well, it has to be said.
Oprah helming the most famous interview in years means that she will now be immortalised in memes. She is a master of her craft --- so maybe this is exactly what she wanted.
Harry seems to be referencing his grandmother here --- well she is 94 and has outlived a lot of her family.
Some side with Meghan and Harry and feel this asks necessary questions not just about racism but also about the relevance of the monarchy itself. Some feel that someone as massively privileged as Markle really has little cause to play the victim. Others feel that her mental anguish is no less relevant than anyone else's. Some side with the British royalty and refute charges of racism. Some even find excuses for that sorry excuse of a human Piers Morgan. But in the end, this tweet says it all.
