Vote, Says PIB – Voting Is Not Just a Right but Also a Responsibility

With the elections looming on the horizon and the future outcome consuming the public discourse, the importance of exercising one's franchise has assumed centre stage. The right to vote means that we participate directly in who and how we are governed. It is this right that sets apart medieval times from the modern era – we are no longer subjects but citizens. We are no longer ruled by rulers but administered by our own elected representatives – service providers, if you will. Each citizen must carefully consider which way they want to cast their vote.

Press Information Bureau (PIB) tweet

Every vote matters. You think your vote is not going to make a difference but it will! You don’t know how others will vote; don’t make assumptions. In a close fight, your vote may matter even more!

Trying too hard

Many of the Tweeple were appreciative of the PIB making use of the iconic DDLJ line to send out its message. Some thought that the meme was dated looking and that meme making in general should be left to those who know more about it.

Vote!

This right to vote is hard-won and precious. Our freedom fighters braved the might of the British, spent long periods and jail and struggled for many years for the freedom and franchise that we now savour.

Never mind this

You may think that voting is like choosing between the devil and the deep blue sea but it is still a choice that you must make. Your choice impacts your next five years; so vote, even if you feel like you're having to choose the lesser evil.

No down-vote?

Social media animals may be used to a different voting system. But even if you don’t find that down vote button, just vote … Even if it puzzles you at first.

Remember!

This is your country and your home! Anywhere else is always going to be ‘foreign’. Vote for the change you wish you could see

Talking politics is useless…

…Unless you vote. You may be passionate about politics and you may have strong views about the suitability or unsuitability of a party or a candidate. But unless you actually vote, all that counts for nothing.

Think your vote doesn’t matter?

It does! There are going to be 45 million first time Indian voters who could play a key role in deciding these elections. 65% Indians are below 35 years of age. Think of it – you have a great deal of power in your hands.

Don’t complain

If you don’t vote and engage with the system, you really cannot complain about the government, its policies, actions or lack thereof.

Go ahead and vote!

Don’t look at it as just another holiday. Get out and vote. You’ll feel good about it! If not for any other reason, vote so you can publish your inked finger on social media!
