In a horrifying ordeal, street cats in Chennai have been found to be boiled alive and then served as meat in biryanis across streets. In what may seem like a case of animal violence, the episode is more horrid because people being served this meat had no clue what they were eating.
The next time you are in Chennai, especially Pallavaram, be extremely wary of eating roadside biryanis, for you might unknowingly eat cat's meat.
The meat is sold at Rs.100 for a kilo and has found many takers, specially people running roadside eateries.
People are using stray cats since these are easily available on the street and can be replaced with chicken or mutton meat without suspicion.
These cats are kept in cages without food and water and then boiled in hot water until they die. This inhuman behaviour was found by police when they raided a few eateries.
Police came to the rescue after they got a whiff of this illegal activity from their sources. The Tamil Nadu police were quite alert and raided quite a few eateries while rescuing a number of cats.
Team members of People for Animals (PfA), an animal rights organization came forward to give the police a helping hand.
The rescued cats were in a dismal state since they had been kept without food and water for many days and had been subjected to trauma. PfA is taking care of them currently.
