I know we referred to VK Sasikala as Tamil Nadu's new Chief Minister just two days ago; but look how that turned out! She is not the new CM of Tamil Nadu, in fact we now know that the plan seems to be in serious jeopardy; there is political and popular opposition to this possibility. Plus there are jokes as well – heralding a bona fide social media event! Here is what is going on in TN politics:
When O Panneerselvam resigned on Sunday, 5 February to make way for Jayalalithaa’s close aide Sasikala, it seemed to be a foregone conclusion that the oath taking would follow in due course. But it did not happen!
Sasikala claims that she has the support of 120 MLAs of the Tamil Nadu legislative assembly, based on which she staked a claim to the chief ministership.
The Governor of Tamil Nadu, Ch Vidyasagar Rao did not administer oath of office and is still seeking legal counsel in the matter.
A petition is also filed against the swearing in of Sasikala as the Chief Minister. This petition seeks to prevent Sasikala from assuming office until the matters relating to corruption, liquor and drugs pending against her in court are resolved.
OPS is known to be something of a serial resigner – he has shown a great alacrity for resigning from his post as CM several times. This time though, he says he was forced to resign.
Sasikala also does not have popular support of the people of Tamil Nadu and has some very vocal people against her in politics as well.
He supports OPS and is against Sasikala and has been quite vocal about his views. He is quite vocal about other issues that the state faces currently too, and has been urging other celebrities to take a stand as well. One can only wonder… is Kamal Hassan planning to run for office himself?
