Recently there was a huge robbery at a museum in Dresden, Germany. Like the movies. The robbers cut power lines, broke in, and stole priceless jewels. Just like the movies. Apparently these priceless jewels will be broken down and sold for parts – also like the movies!
The Green Vault of Dresden, is one of Europe's largest art collections. This is where a daring robbery was carried out on 25th November 2019. The robbers made off with three sets of 18th century jewellery; something German media has described as the biggest theft since World War II.
The thieves used an ax to break in after a fire broke out and the thieves managed to deactivate the museum alarm.
More than the material value is the historic value of the jewellery. Experts are worried that these priceless pieces are now gone forever since it is common practice for thieves to take apart and sell the pieces.
Many question the fact that there seemed to be no security personnel posted at the site and that the security system seemed so easy to disable.
Other such big heists from the past have remained unsolved to this day. People hold out little hope that the Dresden Green Vault heist will be resolved or the treasures recovered.
The tweeple also questioned the value of carrying out a theft of some of the best known jewels in the world.
The story of the robbery is unfolding like a thousand movies about daring robberies and heists. The Pink Panther movies are just one example that comes to mind.
This Twitter user was reminded of the 1981 film Time Bandits, because of reports that describe the robbers as ‘conspicuously small’.
Google's reverse image search function reveals that this image is that of a character called the Professor from Money Heist a Spanish television heist crime drama series.
The tweeple were also reminded of some stylish actors from yesteryears – such as the image of Audrey Hepburn and Peter O-Toole from the film How to Steal a Million.
The robbery reminded people of this Clint Eastwood film from the 1970s.
As with everything, the tweeple also decided to make a few jokes at the expense of the robbery news.
The Dresden Green Vault heist may be worth a billion dollars to some, but others are just looking forward to the film.
