The Meghan Markle-Prince Harry Engagement – How the Royal Prince Got Taken & Why There's So Much Tittle-Tattle!

Anything that British royalty does, seems to pique our interest. Not just because they were our former rulers in a sense but also because most of the world is pretty fascinated by royalty in general, and the British royal family and their shenanigans in particular. Obviously, we also want to know everything about the recently announced engagement of Meghan Markel and Prince Harry – the fascinating story of the prince and the commoner; the unmarried man with an impeccable pedigree and the biracial divorcee!

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle

He is the younger son of Prince Charles and Lady Diana. He has been in relationships before, but it was his relationship with American actor Meghan Markle – confirmed by Kensington Palace since November 2016 – that will be taken to the next level.

The engagement was announced

It was announced on 27 November 2017 that the couple will tie the knot in May 2018. The official announcement was made to this effect by the Kensington Palace. According to reports, Markle will be baptized and confirmed and will also become a British citizen before getting married.

Why the engagement is controversial

Born to a Caucasian father and an African American mother, the stunning Meghan is best known for her role in the popular TV series Suits. The fact that she was married before to actor and producer Trevor Engleson has been the subject of much controversy and has also made her the subject of significant abuse and harassment. The fact that she is older than him by about three years is another aspect for comment. The couple has had to deal with the racial undertones of media commentary, sexism and racism of social media trolls and more.

They met on a blind date

It was an unidentified mutual friend who set the two young people up on a date say sources. It is thought that a close friend of the royal family, Violet von Westenholz is likely the person behind the two meeting. However according to Harry, she was the one “the very first time we met”.

The engagement heralds a significant change in attitudes

Though the some of the public and online trolls have been abusive and intolerant, the royal family itself and the protocol it is governed by appear to have evolved significantly. Marrying a ‘commoner’ would have been bad enough; a marital alliance with a divorcee would have been considered beyond the pale not so long ago! Things have changed sifnificantly. In fact the Queen is delighted at the news of the impending nuptials.

It was very romantic apparently

It was a cosy, romantic evening with the two roasting a chicken at his Nottingham Cottage, when he proposed. Apparently he got down on one knee and she was so delighted she barely even let him finish proposing “Can I say yes now?” she said!

Impact on the other prince

Older brother William also welcomed the news of the engagement and quipped about how it would affect him. “For me personally, I hope it means he stays out of my fridge, and stop him scrounging over my food like he’s done over the last few years. I’m pretty excited,” said the older Prince.

What’s the ring like?

The sentimental among us want to know about the ring, don’t we? The ring consists of three diamonds including one large solitaire in the center. The smaller diamonds are from the personal collection of Harry’s mother, Princess Diana, while the big centre stone is from Botswana where the couple travelled together on a camping trip together.

The filming for Season 7 is done and so is Meghan’s role as Rachel Zane in the series. The couple will now engage deployment as commonwealth envoys and royal duties to cement links and trade deals.
