Saying Thanks To Nurses on International Nurses Day – And Every Day

12 May is observed as Nurses Day each year. This date is significant because it is the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale, perhaps the most famous nurse ever; known as the founder of modern nursing. Now in the middle of the worst medical crisis India has ever faced, our nurses are working hard to save lives and ameliorate the distress of the suffering. They deserve all our appreciation and regard – today more than ever.

#InternationalNursesDay

This is a day for appreciating nurses – the largely unsung backbone of the healthcare system, where doctors are usually the ones that receive most of the limelight.

Tributes from all over

These are our unsung heroes – particularly in these difficult times. Let us all take the time to express our gratitude.

Going beyond the call of duty

Nurses have been working longer hours, working harder and putting themselves directly at risk in these times of a raging pandemic. Many have lost their lives, having contracted the disease in their line of work.

A difficult job

Nursing requires skill, knowledge and a great deal of patience – a difficult job at the best of times.

Giving thanks

Not all heroes wear capes, it is true. Nurses are superheroes of a kind in the current scenario. Many took the opportunity to express gratitude - for personal reasons as well as generally.

They have to be firm

Nurses sometimes have to be firm with recalcitrant patients as well.

A global thanksgiving

As various countries fight their own pandemic battles, people all over the world took the time to say thanks.

Staying positive in difficult times

Nurses are under a lot of pressure and it can be difficult to keep a positive frame of mind at such a time. But even nurses can take the time out for some fun and some motivation.

Important issue

Nurses are often underpaid; most often the remuneration is not commensurate with their hard work, experience and expertise. Nurses Day would be a good time to pay attention to this fact.

Still underpaid

They are expected to go above and beyond the call of duty in these pandemic times. Mere appreciation and creating Twitter trends is easy. The need of the hour is to remunerate nurses appropriately for the difficult, tedious, demanding and risky work they do. It would be a good idea to increase pay and benefits rather than just say Thanks or #HappyNursesDay
