Ramadan 2018: A Brief Overview of What Makes It Different

Ramadan is a big festival in the UAE. It is one-of-a-kind, and has been known to be a period of extensive celebration, bohomie, and merriment. UAE's Federal Authority for Government Human Resources (FAHR) has announced working hours for the holy month of Ramadan. The working hours this year during Ramadan will be from 9 am to 2 pm. This triggers off a series of measures in recent past by the government not to make the period exclusive or daunting. Let's read on to find out :

Just round the corner!

Ramadan is starting soon - in fact, this year it's predicted to be from Tuesday 15 May to Thursday 14 June, though the official dates are not announced yet. This means it is just round the corner and is all set to set hearts on fire.

UAE Government Announces Public Sector Working Hours

This Ramadan, the government has announced the working hours for the public sector and pegged them at 9am to 2pm. The private sector hours has yet to be announced. While Ramadan working hours for the private sector are yet to be announced, the general UAE labour law states that all workers’ hours should be reduced by two hours a day. So if your regular working day is 9am to 6pm, you’ll be allowed to go home at 4pm.

A period of increased consumer demands and increased discounts!

The Ministry of Economy has announced that prices of consumer goods and staple food items in Ramadan will be discounted up to 90 per cent of their original price across the UAE.

This was announced by Dr Hashim Al Nuaimi, Director of Consumer Protection Department at the Ministry of Economy, in a press conference at the Sharjah Union Co-op headquarters on Wednesday.

Ramadan Sharing Fridges: A new initiative!

The Ramadan Sharing Fridges are all about sharing and caring, and serve the needs of the under-privileged well. It all started in 2016, with the creation of a Facebook group encouraging people to set up and stock fridges all over Dubai for those in need to help themselves to.

What followed is a startling invention of magnanimous proportions. The group now has almost 28,000 members, and last year saw the establishment of more than 170 fridges across the city. It is estimated that each fridge feeds at least 100 people a day.

The school day will be shortened to just five hours…

Students in Dubai will only be expected to attend five hours of classes during the upcoming Holy Month, it has been announced.

According to Dubai’s Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA), school will start between 8am and 8.30am until 1pm and 1.30pm, with shorter breaks during the day.
