Prince William may himself have had the conventional fairy tale wedding and his wife may promptly have increased their numbers as royal tradition demanded. However, he supports less conventional lifestyle choices for others; including his children. Clearly, he is a new age prince; here’s why:
It is significant that the visit of Prince William to the LGBTQ+ youth charity was the first time such visit from a member of the royal family of England.
The Prince met the people who work there and spoke about the activities of the charity. During the exchange, he was asked how he would react to his child(ren) being gay. He said that he would “fully support’ his children if they were. He admitted that he would be ‘nervous’ about the pressure that they would face; because of how much harder their life would be.
At a time when a lot of parents still find it difficult to come to terms with their child's ‘alternative’ sexuality, this was welcomed by the Tweeple.
Like it or not, the words and actions and endorsements of the royal family have important consequences. The actions and words of Prince William serve to normalise and mainstream the choices of the LGBTQ+ community. It at least partially smooths the path for individuals and their families who may be struggling.
People of a non-hetero sexual persuasion have long been made to think of themselves as abnormal or even as deviant. It helps to receive support from those whose words mean a lot to a lot of people.
Support from those in positions of power and influence impact society as a whole and also give a sense of comfort and validation to individuals and the choices they’ve made in life.
This Twitter user seems to suggest that the Prince's support is no big deal; that 99% of parents have no problem with their children being gay. That figure of 99% may be extremely wide off the mark in reality, however.
While some have a religious aversion to the LGBTQ+ community, some justify it in the name of God; and His Grand Design in a sense.
Or maybe they were genuinely concerned enough to ask.
