Delhi weather is generally brutal – we are either freezing or melting with about two benign months sandwiched in between. This time around, however, the usually pleasant month of March has been cold and blustery and stormy; with driving rain and hail. The unseasonal thunder and lightning and rain has everyone confused.
I stepped out on Saturday afternoon for a few essentials and was caught unawares by the heavens opening up suddenly. The noise of hailstones hitting the car can be quite unnerving.
This is the time when we expect to put away the woollies and enjoy some mild weather. However, temperatures are still low and the skies are dark and lowering.
What’s with the hail, asked Delhiites. We've had hail several times in the past few weeks.
…That warm weather tends to destroy viruses and puts the brakes on contagion.
Usually we dread the summer. For a change we were looking forward to it.
The hailstones ranged from small to big and people were left wondering about the divine design of the Gods.
Just as we thought summer would arrive, these arrived instead.
For some reason, a lot of people were thinking about this old song.
With the coronavirus pandemic, expensive petrol (despite record low prices of crude oil) and the stock market crash already making headlines, we don’t need more bad news.
Which scenes like this all over Delhi, people were left wondering where they were.
Some gathered up the hailstones and posted pictures on social media.
While the hailstorm was fascinating, it also caused a lot of problems and destruction.
Gardens all over the city saw ripped leaves and destroyed spring flowers.
While the hail may fascinate most of us and mildly inconvenience some, it is terribly destructive for the Indian farmer.
Many experts are of the view that freak weather incidents like these owe themselves to climate change; an ominous reminder that worlds leaders are simply not doing enough in this regard.
People have had enough of the #DelhiRain now – the unseasonal cold, thunderstorms, the destruction and coronavirus! Let summer come please – we promise we will try not to complain too much about the #DelhiHeat.
