#Megxit – Royal Couple Exits & the Tweeple Get Their Meme On

I have long maintained that meme-makers are the cultural chroniclers of our time. They use humour to comment, critique and inform us about politics, entertainment, sport and lifestyle – simply, effectively. Now that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have announced their decision to step back from the royal duties and leave the UK to settle in America, #Megxit quickly started to trend.

#Megxit

Meghan-exit – that is it in a nutshell (not Harry-exit, note). The newly married couple (well not newly, they now have a son, Archie) being given grief for daring to want a life of their own.

Happy to escape?

Being royalty in Britain means that one's every action is scrutinised under a microscope, dissected and found wanting. Maybe the two just want a different, more normal life?

Big news

This is big news and the royal-exit is now going to be examined, discussed and critiqued to death – by everyone with an opinion.

‘Other things he’d rather do’

British royalty has various ceremonial and other duties. Prince Harry isn't interested apparently. There is now speculation about what other things he’s like to do.

The speculation

Some of the tweeple had some farfetched theories.

This thought

This occurred to many of us – what is Harry's last name?

Sounds about right

Perhaps Markle wants to return to acting; now perhaps fittingly as a part of the Netflix series The Crown?

The common life?

Many had fun at the couple's expense; visualising various possibilities of their future life.

Modern fairy story?

This is the story where the girl came and rescued the prince, rather than the other way around?

The new Yoko Ono

Some context? Well Yoko Ono, John Lennon’s wife was widely held responsible for breaking up the Beatles. Poor Markle is accused of doing the same to the British royal family.

Par for the course

It is always the women who get blamed anyway.

This angle

It’s his fault, not hers, is this view.

Some Brits are angry because of this

The grand wedding was paid for by tax payers’ money.

Some applaud the decision

Markle’s mixed heritage and divorcee status had invited a lot of criticism in the UK. #Megxit is seen as the couple deciding not to tolerate any more of the nonsense.

Others, not so much

Many think this is a huge mistake and that it’s all going to end very badly for the Prince.

Royalty isn't fun

Maybe Markle was fed up living in a fishbowl – or worse?

What’s the big deal!

That’s a grown man setting up house. Many of the tweeple were like – that's nothing to get your panties in a twist about!

However, some are upset

So upset that they have taken the extreme step of unfollowing the royal couple on social media!

Bril!

‘The husband formerly known as the Prince’. It’s a rather brilliant headline, especially if one gets the allusion to the late singer.

Mostly…

Many were fiercely debating the right and the wrong of it; the possible consequences and the future of British Royalty as a whole.  Mostly though, this was the reaction to #Megxit - #HoHum.
