I think there should be a national jalebi day or a tandoori chicken day or even an R D Burman day when we recall all of the Boss's gems. But what’s the need of a Maths Day? Evidently someone thought it fit to have a National Mathematics Day and 22 December is observed as such in India. As expected there were many tweets for and against this.
Srinivasa Ramanujan was one of India’s best known and most brilliant of mathematicians. He was born on 22 December. It was in 2012 (his 125th birth anniversary) that then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh announced that 22 December would be National Mathematics Day.
The words of Ramanujan may make no sense to someone like me (given my general incomprehension of algebra and geometry). However, this is the sort of thing that fascinates and excites a lot of people.
People took to Twitter to celebrate all that they love about maths and also to share interesting tidbits about Ramanujan the math genius.
Many of us would have learned something or the other relating to Ramanujan in school.
This commentator shared how she was the only female math honours student in a batch of 137.
On the occasion of National Mathematics Day, institutions organise events such as this.
Clearly this person has a personal attachment to Ramanujan and/or maths. Or maybe they just love cake.
There were many who bravely shared info about how they barely scraped through in maths (and many didn’t even manage to do that).
The looming presence of maths in the syllabus of secondary and higher secondary certificate exams has probably decided more career choices than any other subject.
Maths – particularly algebra and geometry (arithmetic I understood and found useful) – confused me, troubled me and made me feel stupid. Is it any wonder that I disliked it?
Some commentators shared this viral clip once again on the occasion of Maths Day.
Even as others recalled the contributions of Ramanujan and shared their own experiences with maths on the day, one commentator tweeted this on #NationalMathematicsDay.
