Langar on a Train and Other Images of Hope & Courage from Ukraine

We see distressing images of bombed buildings, injured soldiers and civilians, and people huddling terrified in bunkers as enemy shelling continues unabated. However, there are also other stories of hope and courage coming out of Ukraine. There is the story of langar on a train. Then there was the child born in a bomb shelter. A Ukrainian couple prepared for war right after the day of their marriage. An 80-year-old turned up to fight for his country:

Langar on a train

The founder and CEO of the philanthropic organisation Khalsa Aid tweeted this video of people serving train passengers what appears to be roti, subzi and perhaps achaar. And no this is not in India but in a train in Ukraine traveling to the Polish border.

This brave Russian

Russian tennis player Andrey Rublev wrote “No War Please” on a TV camera after he won the semifinal at the Dubai Championships on Friday. This is an act of great courage when we think how very predatory the Russian ruling dispensation is; how completely intolerant of any kind of dissent.

Born in a bomb shelter

A makeshift bomb shelter in the subway was where this little one was born. Elsewhere in Ukraine, babies are being born in hospital basements and are being moved there soon after birth; even the babies of the neonatal ICU.

This 80 year old man

This elderly gent decided to join the resistance against the Russians – something he said he was doing for his grandchildren. This guy travels light!

First day as a married couple

They probably didn’t think they would spend their first day after getting married like this: collecting rifles and getting ready to defend their country.

This bit of defiant courage

This elderly woman is offering sunflower seeds to a soldier armed to his teeth. She tells him to put the seeds in his pocket – so what when he dies in Ukraine, sunflowers will bloom where he falls. Props for sheer audacity!

Learning to drive a tank

Bizarrely, there are Ukrainians taking over Russian military vehicles – and posting TikTok videos about it!

This act of selfless courage

That is a landmine in his hands – clearly this is a guy who does what he feels he has to – even if it is at great risk to life and limb.

Rescuing pets

An apartment was damaged during shelling – these ‘residents’ in a cat carrier and a fish tank were rescued from there.

This made me cry

A mother is reunited with her son and then she hugs the rescuer of her son – what’s not to get moist-eyed about!

“We are all Ukrainians now”

People from all over the world are expressing solidarity and offering to help in any way they can.

This bit of hope

“Im alive... for now... hope we will be fine... sun is shining, birds are chirping.” Someone translated in the comments – a message of hope in the midst of brutal war.
