Its Pouring This December in Delhi – Some Are Delighted, Others Not So Much

Rain at this time of the year isn't a bad thing in itself unless one is a farmer worried about the Rabi crop. In fact, the average Delhi-wasi is delighted that the rain will dramatically reduce pollution levels and we will breathe better quality air at least for a while. But the thunder and lightning were a bit scary. How cold will it get now – this is also scaring Delhi now after the heavy December showers!

When it snows, it pours

If there is snow in the mountains, can rains in the plains be far behind?

Suddenly…

…Showers! And not a mild drizzle, mind you. It was an angry downpour with attendant drama of a proper thunderstorm that lasted all through the evening and night on Thursday. And then there was more rain on Friday as well.

Scary!

The thunder was so loud at times, it sounded like an explosion. One woke up in the middle of the night to sounds of crashing thunder.

But then

One went back to sleep thinking about cleaner air.

Why!

People are getting ready to freeze their butts off now that it has rained so much. And they are not looking forward to it.

WD, our old foe

Cannot understand some freak weather occurrence? Blame the Western Disturbance! It is always the WD to blame.

Problems

Of course, there were waterlogging and traffic jams because of the rain and hail in some places.

And this

There were flight diversions and delays as a result of the unseasonal downpour.

Rain, rain go away

Some just wanted the rain to go away. Winter rain can get dismal and gloomy and depressing for some.

We still love the rain

No matter how cold it’s going to get, the sight, sound and smell of the rain never fails to evoke joy and delight.

Rain is music to the ears

There is a special joy in being tucked up cosy in bed while the sound of the rain outside soothes the soul to sleep.

#DecemberRain

For us Indians, rain is always a happy-making, life-giving blessing. Whether it comes in June or in December, Delhi rain never fails to lighten the heart and gladden the spirit.
