At some point in the dim and distant past, one had been prescribed isabgol or psyllium husk by a doctor. One found it positively disgusting; actually vomit-inducing if one is perfectly candid. This is dietary fibre, better known for its stool-bulking properties and is often used to manage constipation. Not exactly what one would put into ice cream, right? Amul thought differently. Their kaju anjeer (cashew and fig) ice cream is now available with the ‘goodness of isabgol’. They think Isab-cool is cool, but some netizens thought differently.
It certainly is new – no one ever thought to put a laxative in ice cream and call it a treat for the ‘sweet tooth and belly’. It isn't just good for digestion but also for people with diabetes and cholesterol.
Netizens were quite startled by the idea of isabgol in ice cream.
Why not! Isabgol is tasteless and odourless so why not add it to ice cream.
What? Isabgol in ice cream? Wat fresh hell is this!
Castor Oil? A known laxative, sometimes prescribed for pregnant women.
This?
Amul, Mother Dairy and a few other brands proudly state that they use real milk. Other brands are not allowed to call themselves ‘ice cream’ because there isn't enough milk or milk products in them to warrant the description. This is why they are called ‘frozen desserts.’ for Amul to create vegan (nondairy) ice cream would be a distinctly off-brand move.
…Not? Some thought it to be an outrageous and outlandish idea.
Some thought that this is smart marketing. Considering the large segment of the population that is likely to have constipation, there are many who would feel justified in their isabgol ice cream indulgence
Some thought that this type of ice cream may have its uses – such as making batsmen run extra fast between wickets.
A lot of people were inspired by this idea – this commentator even decided to write what sounds like ad copy. Because there is opportunity even in constipation.
If they can have supposedly pain-relieving paracetamol ice cream, why not constipation relieving isabgol ice cream. I am not a fan of the kaju-anjeer flavour of ice cream. Now if they added isabgol to some of my fave flavours like Hafus Mango or Dark Chocolate, I would be tempted. I hate isabgol but isabgol disguised as ice cream? I think that could work.
