#IamSoMiddleClass Is Trending & It Resonates With Us

#IamSoMiddleClass is not a new hashtag by any means – it has long been a way for people to share and have a gentle laugh at our own peculiarities and frugal habits. Remember Maya Sarabhai and her middle-class jibes? It started to trend again on Twitter recently; triggered by yet another vitriolic attack on actor Rhea Chakraborty. However, it soon took on a life of its own and gave us several funny and identifiable memes – which resonate with all of us.

It started with this

It started with yet another attack on Rhea Chakraborty, actor and former partner of late Shushant Singh Rajput who, in a trial by media has been accused and summarily been found guilty of being involved in Rajput’s death.

Under attack

The constant barrage of accusations and attacks, have called her everything from a witch to a murderer to a drug dealer /user. This latest attack alleges that she is anything but middle class. The hounding by the press and social media attacks have extended to her entire family as well; including Rhea’s father an ex-Army personnel and her brother.

Meanwhile this is viral

The role of the media in hounding Chakraborty and her family and holding virtually guilty without trial has shocked many. Some have made funny spoofs such as this to highlight the reprehensible role of the media in this entire sordid saga.

But soon it became about this

#IamSoMiddleClass was trending and people were sharing the little idiosyncrasies that make us all oh-so-middle-class.

Identifiable

Any Indian kid who makes an expensive demand from their parent is bound to receive a sarcastic reply such as this.

Who has this phone?

No one! Not the middle class, for sure!

Bun maska and chai

This is the standard breakfast of so many – particularly those that enjoy the unaltered old world charm and economy of Irani cafes.

True!

Us the middle class are careful about where we eat – and some of us look at the prices before the dish!

We all do this

That leftover sliver of soap is always, always stuck to the new one --- because why waste!

We manage with what we have

#IamSoMiddleClass that I use this charger, says this Twitter user – me too!

Waste not, want not

We will use a rolling pin, cut open the tube, anything to squeeze out every last bit of that tooth paste.

If it works, use it

So what if it’s cracked!

Of course there were a few political tweets

The tweeple like to point out the lavish current lifestyle and possessions of our PM who otherwise has a carefully built image of humble origins

We believe this

Many of us will avoid lending money to friends and relatives – because this spoils relations, we believe.

Entertainment choices

#IamSoMiddleClass that my entertainment choices are also limited by this.

Half ticket!

There is a lot we’ll do to avoid paying full fare as far as possible.

Only when the heat is unbearable!

Otherwise the AC is deemed an unnecessary expense.

Of course!

Why throw away a perfectly OK plastic bottle – so what it tastes of the carbonated beverage that used to be in it!

Wash and wear!

Disposable? What’s that!

Reuse, recycle, repurpose!

Because why not!

This is all of us

If we overcome our #IamSoMiddleClass mindset long enough to eat non-homemade pizza, we will most certainly save those extra condiments for homemade pizza/pasta.
