Fourth Wave of COVID? No! Say It Ain’t So!

We are now thinking about a post-COVID world – when we go out and see people without masks it feels strange but we are getting used to it. The world is looking more like it was two years ago before the virus descended upon the world. After the first wave and then the brutal second wave and then the rapid but less destructive third wave we have had enough! And just as we were thinking of relaxing a little, we hear about the Fourth Wave of COVID.

This still feels strange

Going out and seeing maskless people still feels strange – until we realise that we aren't wearing our own masks either.

Things like this…

…Are happening.

And now this

New Zealand, which has managed its coronavirus pandemic so well so far, is reporting a high number of community cases.

And China

The country many would hold responsible for the whole thing in the first place is also recording a spike in positive cases.

Deltacron

This is a combination of the Delta variant and the Omicron variant, that seems to be posing major challenges in many parts of the world.

It is a depressing thought

Kids have lost two years of normal life – learning new things, being with friends, experiencing and learning to navigate life…these are years of their young lives they are never getting back.

How concerned should we be?

With cases surging in so many countries around the world, Indians are bracing for a possible fourth wave. However experts say that right now, there is no cause for concern, because this variant has been around in India for a while. So, until the variant of concern is notified, there may be little cause for concern.

Low probability

“There is no scientific, epidemiological, virological reason” to think that India will have a fourth wave, say experts.

Remain vigilant

While the chance of a Forth Wave – in June or otherwise – are low in India, we cannot afford not to be vigilant.

5 fold strategy

It is recommended that we continue to follow the five-pronged approach of test-track-treat-vaccinate and adhere to COVID appropriate behaviour.  The last time we relaxed a year ago, we had the devastating Second Wave of the pandemic.
