Donkeys and Other Animals That Have Been To Jail

Every now and again, one reads or hears some news that appears so ridiculous, it seems as if it was fabricated; at the very least it appears to belong to a bygone era or a less evolved time. So when you hear about animals being put into jail, you don’t quite credit what you hear! And yet something this bizarre can and does happen. Recently some donkeys were put into jail; we bring you some more instances of animals being in prison!

Punished for eating plants

In Uttar Pradesh's Jalaun district some donkeys wandered too close to the jail and ended-up eating some tasty seeming but expensive plants close to Urai district jail. The plants were worth Rs 5 lakh, so the jail authorities decided to ‘punish’ them.

Four days in jail

The senior officer had warned the owner of the donkeys about letting his animals loose near the plants. However, those warnings were not heeded. The owner still let the donkeys loose, so they were ‘taken into custody’. They remained in jail for four days before they were released.

Reactions were wide ranging

Since the news was tweeted by ANI, the reactions were many, some thought that something like this could only happen in India. Another tweet pointed out that the police should have taken the owner of the donkeys into custody and not the donkeys!

Other views

There was also one view that expressed surprise at such expensive plants being bought by the authorities in a state where poverty and hunger is rife. It was also pointed out that no arrests have been made in the vandalism, criminal intimidation and assault relating to the Padmavati controversy, but that donkeys were swiftly apprehended and arrested!

Some goats were also ‘detained’

In 2013 in Chennai, some goats were found guilty of vandalizing a new police patrol car. Three goats were therefore taken into custody. Apparently, the goats were used to damaging the residents’ cars, but the attack on the new maroon Innova apparently made them see red!

A pigeon was also ‘arrested’

This pigeon was apprehended close to the Indo-Pak border in Amritsar in 1010 allegedly for spying. Apparently, the bird was found with Urdu letters and markings and assumed to be carrying secret messages to Pakistan, which led to its ‘arrest’.

Elephant was released on bail

The story of an elephant called Thechikottukavu Ramachandran went thus: widely regarded as the tallest domestic elephant in the country, this Kerala pachyderm ran amok, killing three people at a temple festival. The forest authorities filed a case against the elephant among others. In the event, the elephant’s owners had to pay Rs 30 lakh to bail him out. The court also directed that the elephant should not be paraded for the following three months.
