China’s Anti-India Video & Indian Replies – The Funny and the Factual

Given the current Dokhlam standoff between the Asian nuclear powers – India and China – the Chinese are at pains to tell the international community ‘their side’ of the story. A rather bizarre video featuring what the Chinese perhaps envision as an ‘Indian’ person was published recently. Most Indians responded to the content with amused disbelief and dismissed it while a few others chose to react with a few facts and some humour. Here is what happened:

China’s version of the Dokhlam standoff

China's official news agency Xinhua published a video called the ‘Seven Sins’; which purports to speak about “India’s trespassing upon the UNDISPUTED Chinese territory”. Clearly (and rather ironically) this is for the consumption of people other than the Chinese, seeing that YouTube is banned in China. Not to nit-pick, but the Chinese misspelt ‘because’. As for the woman’s strange Sino-American accent, well…here is the video without further ado:

China's Anti-India video

The video features a very strange looking person who must be the Chinese version of a Sikh man; someone who speaks in a rather unidentifiable sing-song accent (clearly the Chinese watch a lot of American sitcoms). The video talks about India ‘bool-dozers’ and the 7 scenes sins of India. This is a video meant to evoke sympathy for the Chinese position on Dokhlam; what it does mainly, is attract incredulous laughter at the ignorance and mendacity of our giant neighbor.

More amused than outraged

While there was the usual bit of outpouring from the ‘outraged and insulted’ lot, most commentators and netizens were amused. On Twitter, people were busy pointing out the awful quality of the fake beard – clearly ‘Made in China’ it was pointed out. The fact that the woman in the video says ‘dude’, her strange accent and the fact that she felt one should call 911 (the American helpline number) was a matter of much hilarity as well.

“So Sorry!”

Known for its amusing and topical videos featuring caricatures of politicians and other famous people, the ‘So Sorry’ series reacted with this video: Jinping ko gussa kyun aata hai. The two countries’ leaders are at the border; one is laughing at a screen the other is flaming furious. It may be a bit juvenile but it is funny nevertheless.

Some fact checking

California based standup comic, environmentalist and social activist Vasu Primalani made this video for the Hindustan Times.

She responded in kind

In her video response to the Chinese video, there is some much deserved ribbing, pointing out inaccuracies and clarifying a few other things. She calls it ‘fake news’ and invites China to try and sell it to someone who believes in fake news!
