Mother's Day is the day when a lot of people eulogise the women who birthed them, express gratitude for the sacrifices made by mothers and so on. But motherhood isn't just Nirupa Roy moments of great sacrifice and selflessness. Motherhood is fun, frustrating, educative and constantly surprising – as any mother who is not Nirupa Roy will tell you. If you're a mother, you'll totally relate to these memes:
Mothers quickly say goodbye to personal space – forever. The child thinks of her body as a source of food, comfort, a place to sleep and anything that the child wants it to be.
Some feel boys are easier to bring up and others feel boys are more challenging; more boisterous and destructive. The fact is kids are challenging. You have to learn on the job when that job is being a mother and it’s a job that has no real retirement age.
That kid may be tired, sleepy, hungry or may just want some attention. Every mom’s had to deal with the irritated, fractious, badly behaved kid in public while she is herself irritated.
This is the one day that kids will make an effort to make their mothers feel loved and appreciated. What about the rest of the year?
It’s a job where you're on duty 24x7, with no days off, and no vacations. In fact, a mother of little kids is lucky if she can go to the bathroom or shower in peace.
When I find things about my kids that are annoying, I remind myself where they got those annoying traits from. Sometimes I can blame their father. But all too often, I cannot avoid the glaring evidence that the apple does not fall far from the tree – in this case, the tree is me.
Depending upon their age and level of skill, mothers can expect a handprint card, a store bought card possibly with a mug or other gift, breakfast in bed or all chores taken care of for the day. It feels nice.
That kid can drive you completely around the bend, exhaust you, create a mess, and make trouble in ways you couldn’t imagine – but at the end of the day, there is nothing and no one more loveable than that kid.
