Budget 2019 – Some Were Disappointed, But the Memes Were Funny

The national budget was presented in the Loksabha and there were many who had a lot of expectations (some quite unrealistic) from it. Obviously, there were many who were disappointed; some more than others – especially because it was seen as a budget with nothing for the middle class.

Permutations and combinations

Most middle-class people hung on to every word of the FM and did their own calculations as well, but found no provisions for them.

In a nutshell

Got something in the budget? Yes a Thank You, says this cartoon. Or as another Twitter user put it – this budget has something for everyone – disappointment.

No increase in exemption limits

After the interim budget promised to increase the exemption limit for salaried people, there were high expectations.

Some were really upset

And this guy expressing his deep distress after Pakistan lost to India in a viral video seems to express those feelings quite accurately.

Before and after

The expectations were high in the morning. They were mostly dashed by evening.

What about farmers?

Some also felt that the budget has not addressed farmer distress and their issues adequately.

What about this?

This Twitter user had a sound idea – to tax that which is so harmful for us – our health and the environment.

Not listening

Some felt that the government is oblivious to the hopes and aspirations of the people.

Nothing to see

Nothing for the middle class, that is!

Expectation versus reality

The slowed growth rate, farmer distress, record high unemployment rates are seen as huge problems facing us today. People were disappointed that the budget seemed to address none of those issues.

What about the economy?

Will the budget fix any of that? People don’t seem to have a lot of hope.

Health and education?

The budget seemed to overlook key issues that are the most significant human indicators for any country, felt some.

“Return gift”

The announcement of new coin currency did not impress much.

Didn’t quite understand

Some of us couldn’t make a lot of sense of the budget.

True story!

This ubiquitous biscuit packet seen at every small shop and tea stall in India will likely remain the same price. So clearly there is little that will actually change in our lives as a result of the budget. There is little point in breast-beating and wailing about it, right? Most of us fatalistic Indians would agree.
