The fact that Sania Mirza and Shoaib Malik are both top sportspersons in their own right is obviously not the only reason everything they do and say becomes the subject of avid attention. The fact that one is from India and the other from Pakistan makes it all much more newsworthy. So when the celebrity couple told the world that they were expecting a baby and then announced the arrival of a baby boy recently, this created ripples on both sides of the border.
Shoaib Malik announced the arrival of a baby boy and that his ‘girl is doing great’; referring to the new mother. In another tweet he also announced that the baby has been named Izhaan.
Obviously the jokesters started pff immediately!
There is a picture of a new born doing the rounds (a real new-born not the full grown one above). Malik clarified that, that is not the picture of their baby and that they have not yet shared any pictures of their baby.
There were hearty congratulations from fans, sports lovers and many others such as this organisation for gender equality (of which Sania Mirza is the goodwill ambassador).
Known to be a close friend of Sania Mirza, filmmaker Farah Khan was very excited at the news of becoming a khala.
There were these questions of course.
Though there were those who managed to inject hatred even into an event as happy as this, mostly the news of this new arrival was greeted by love and goodwill from both sides of the border.
Popular twitter personality Ramesh Srivats had this funny comment to share by way of a congratulatory message.
Because in the mind of the cricket mad subcontinent, tennis isn’t even an option!
