The era of animated movies is here. With film-making being at the mercurial height of fame, acceptance and massive creative rendition, it is hardly a surprise to note the sheer number of animated movies being churned from India, the very heart of Asia.

Fabulous story lines, telling tales, comedy mixed with tragedy, dark humour with undertones of a good laugh- there's an entire world waiting to embrace you with open arms when it comes to animated movies. So, which are some popular movies made by the Indian filmmakers that have had both critics and fans talking.

1. Super Team

Directed by Sanjay Patel in 2015, this is a marvelous film that dabbles in contrasting genres of mythology and fantasy. The movie is all about connecting to one's roots, culture and tradition while presenting a modern way of looking at and embracing our gods and goddesses. This is an autobiographical account of Patel, marked as a tribute to his father.

2. Good Morning Mumbai

Everybody loves Mumbai, the city of dreams and the city of a million myriad colors and characters. But often, we fail to notice that living in a slum is difficult. It can be quite a painstaking truth to note the daily routine of a commoner prevailing in a Mumbai slum. The movie captures that detail with fascinating colors. It is directed by Rajesh Thakare and Troyvasant C. (2011).

3. Mailbox

Living in an era dominated utterly by short term messaging, emails and fax, the mailbox has become a glorious reminder of the time gone by. Nikhita Prabhudesai captures the simple pleasures of life and the happiness one seeks in earthly pleasures and the spirit of redemption. The movie revolves around the life of a mailman, wrongly accused of stealing letters. He will leave no chance unattended at proving his innocence in this emotionally riveting tale. 

4. Printed Rainbow

Directed by Geetanjali Rao in 2006, this movie took the hitherto less explored genre by Indian movie makers to a whole new level. The grandmother, that ever charming old character often holds a central but fascinating plot in our lives in India. The movie maker takes life from the vantage point of the granny who lives with her cat and is greatly fantasized by things as unique as matchboxes. This is a lively and joyful movie that will leave you feeling good. 

5. Chasni

Abhishek Verma's 2014 revered tale about social crime and violence will make you think about the murky details of life and the harrowing effect is having on us. The movie deals with painstaking tragedies, especially that of acid attacks, and has an important social message at the heart of its moving tale. 

6. Horn Ok Scream

This 2014 movie by Aashay Meshram may seem like a laugh riot from the title but is anything but. A crucial breakthrough for animation movies in India, especially for the hitherto less visited genre, it touches upon, the constant suspense and thrills of this movie will surely keep you hooked and to the edge of your seats. 

7. Fakir

At first instance, anyone would be captivated by the particular title chosen for this 2013 animation movie where Varun Nair has strummed the chords of the heart by telling an impressive tale of a fakir who has nothing to himself; no material means to live other than inventing basic necessities to survive against the harsh realities depending on his skills and uncanny ingenuity. It's a telling tale based on a simple, albeit gripping plot.

 

With such fascinating story-tellers around and such gripping subjects, we wonder why there aren't as many animated movies each year as there are mainstream movies. Hope the tide changes!
